9 Frame Analysis - Two Door Cinema Club (What You Know)

12 Frame Analysis - Example (Stay Awake)

Shot 1 : 0:04 seconds
The first shot I have decided to use is a long shot showing a full length view of the artist, I think this has been used to show how small he is in context with the letter he is leaning agaisnt which also links to the whole message of the song and the video. The subject (artist) is situated on the left hand side of the screen agaisnt the large letter "E" which stands for he's bands name "Example", the letter almost looks like it's shadowing the artist which shows the audience that the artist wouldnt be known to them if it wasn't for hes band hence the size difference.
I believe because the artist wanted to voice out such a strong opinion about the generation we live in and how no body is treated the same because we are all different the composistion of the shot only includes the letter and the artist to make sure the audience's attention is completely focused.
The artist is wearing a baseball jacket and converse type shoes which is what the audience are used to because it's how he stands out from other artists. The main prop used in this shot is the giant letter which gives off alot of impact and is very eyecatching. The location and colours used again are very minimal to make sure all attention is focused on the point the artist is trying to get across so this shot looks like its been shot in a studio which is better than a busy background and the colours are black and white which contrast well together and make it stand out compared to other videos.

Shot 2 : 0:09 seconds
The second shot shows a birds eye view frame used to show the various tattoo's on this one individuals body and also hes body language. This camera shot has been used I believe to show how individual this person is,compared to the "average person" who wouldnt be seen to have that many tattoo's. I also think its been focused just on the persons body is to show the subject they are focusing on as he's head is not in the frame because linking back to the narrative many people are not accepted for what they are so it's as if he doesnt have the right to be fully shown because he doesnt look the same as everyone else.
I really like the way this show hasnt had much effort put into it in the way the composistion isint directly in the middle and you can see someone else sat next to the person. Also no costumes or make up had to be used because the main subject is the male's tattoos and being shot in natural light means you can see them alot more,as you can see the subject is sitting on a car which again means no real posistioning has gone into this shot.

Shot 3 : 0:20 seconds
This shot is more of a close up of the artist to show the real emotion in he's face and I believe this is because the narrative of the video he is trying to get across to the audience means alot to him. He is posistioned in the middle of the frame because he is the only singer in the band, so all attention is on him. You can see from the focus in he's eyes that the words he is singing have truth in them. Again the colours are black and white which are only shown on shots of the artist himself, this may play another part in the narrative to show he is "different" from the rest of the people in he's video.

Shot 4 : 0:26 seconds
This is one of my favourite shots from the video because instantly you can tell these girls love to be different and are confident in there own skin. They are both framed in the middle of the shot so you can also see the background behind them this maybe because it will intrigue the audience as to why the location for this shot is in the woods/forest and not in a busy town centre where girls there age normally hang around. The costumes used in this shot I believe would be the girls own clothes as they play a significant part in what makes them different, this element I believe is used throughout the video in the way that no directors or costume designers have given anyone (but the artist) clothes to wear and the camera crew have gone to them to shoot thier outlook on life for the video's narritive. There facial expressions show that although they are different they are not happy and this is again what links back to the narritive of people not being accepted because there different.

Shot 5 : 0:36 seconds
The shallow focus on this shot makes it much more interesting to look at and although it's a medium shot the composistion shows two people in the shot both on different levels but are still linked together this maybe to get the viewers to widen what they are looking at in a shot and to also link back to the narrative which this shot does well. The army tank at the back of this shot with one of the people stood on top of it indicates the narrative to the shot relates to voilence and fighting and how it occurs frequently around the world and as the man closest to the camera is clenching he's fist it suggests to me that because these two men are "different" voilence is something they may have to take from other people whether it be mental discrimination (racism) or physical (fighting). The costume that these two men are wearing is very casual, however the leather hat and jacket that the man closest to the camera is wearing suggests he has he's own sense of style, just like the other people in the video. One of the reasons for the prejudice and discrimination they recieve. As this shot is in a deserted field it does work well with the tank and the characters each of them are playing.

Shot 6 : 0:44 seconds
Shallow focus is again used in this shot but as the shot moves to the right the quality of it becomes deeper. I believe they have used this effect in the editing stage because you can see what the objects are in the shot without it being clear and without it the whole shot would of been pretty plain. The shot includes two peices of china hanging from peices of rope and with the background faded I can still make out that it's in a forest, so they may have been used to reflect the personality or the love of one of the people used in this video, this certainly shows the element of them being different but not necesserily in a bad way. But I think the main use of them is to show the entrance into the place all of these people hang out in away from the world of people who discriminate them.

Shot 7 & Shot 8 : 0:52 & 0:53 seconds
I have decided to analyse these two shots together because they both have the same narrative behind them they have just been shot in two different locations. Shot 7 has been taken from the forest scene wereas shot 8 has been taken from underneath a tunnel. These places/locations both indicate to me that they are places these people chose to hang out at. Both camera angles are long shots so you can see everything that is happening and also pick up on every little detail. The composistion of the shots is also really similar because the main element of each is shot 7 has a circus type of tent and shot 8 has a variety of speakers and the people are all posistioned around these which I believe contains the music that they are all dancing too. You can't see what make up each of the people have on in the shots but the costumes used I would believe are there own clothes because as you can see they are all dressed individually because they all have seperate styles and linking this back to the narrative of the video it now leads onto these two locations are the only places these groups of people can hang out with each other without feeling like someone doesn't like and you can see there positive emotions in there body language, even though they all look like they are having a good time I do believe that they shouldnt have to hide away from everyone to be thereselves.

Shot 9 : 1:08 seconds
The composistion is the only reason I chose this shot because the man is standing so close to the camera he looks as if he is almost being squashed in by the two high rise buildings. I think the buildings indicate this man standing up for himself agaisnt the disrespectful people because of the lyric "If we don't kill ourselves, we'll be the leaders of a messed up generation" and the messed up generation line is what the rest of the world believe these group of people are which is wrong. The camera has also been posistioned on a low angle to make sure the male was centre of the image with the two buildings at either side. Again the costume/make up looks like the males own choice and again shows how he is different. The lighting is very good because the camera is facing up over it's catching all the light from the blue skies which reflects perfectly over the shot. Linking back to the narrative this shot shows a change in the "generation" as you can see the male's body language has changed and he seems to be alot more confident and a "leader" of what he believes in, he's looking at the camera directly as to say "this is me" which is I think what the artist wanted the video to do, for people who are seen as different or individual to know it's ok and to be confident in who they are.

Shot 10 : 2:10 seconds
This is another artist shot because I thought that it was needed to show how he's body language and emotion had changed from the beginning of the video and also that he still has shots in it and the limelight has not been taken away. This is a medium close up shot of the artist and the reason I dont think they used a close up is because they wanted to give the effect of the artist getting closer up into the camera lens in a way that he was making sure the audience are still paying attention, Like a check point really. The composistion includes the artist and also the "E" logo because thats how everyone recognises the artist it's also been used so you seperate the artist from the other people used in the video. The location, props and costume are all the same as shots 1 and 3. This shot I believe just shows by the artist facial expression he is wondering if the viewers are taking the video meaning in.

Shot 11 & Shot 12 : 3:01 & 3:08 seconds
These two shots are like shots 7 & 8, very similar so I am going to analyse them together. The camera is again at a medium shot for both of these because they include various number of different people so I decided to use these two shots because you can see most of the groups in both shots. In shot 11 it includes the group having a powder paint fight and in shot 13 it shows the group jumping through water sprinklers, I believe these two activities have been used to show the groups celebrating and could be for many different reasons but I believe the main one is that they are all confident now in who they are and know that being different isint a bad thing infact it's better than following the crowd. Costumes and make up can't really be seen in either of the shots because of the action that's taking place and the props (paint and water) that are being used. The narrative of the video ends with all the people included in it jumping around having fun with each other and appreciating how different they are but by taking part in these activities shows they are just like the rest of us and I believe the story behind this video is so clear and a really good message to send out and the performance by the artist and the other people used in the video relates to the message really well.

9 Frame Analysis - Pixie Lott (All About Tonight)

Shot 1 - 0:05 seconds
A meat shot is used in this first shot and I believe it's to introduce the viewers to the artist and because she is very famous many people will recognise her straight away, these shots are very detailed and you can see her seductive look into the camera which Andrew Goodwin would describe as voyeurism where female artists looks are used especially for the male audience. The composistion of this shot only contains the artists face and hand and this is because it is a meat shot and nothing else should be included. Make up is used in this shot, her eyes are very smokey and she has lipgloss on which link to the song title "all about tonight" as she could be getting ready for a night out. The lighting is very bright in this shot so you can see the detail in the artists face and also to show her beauty.

Shot 2 - 0:28 seconds
Editing techniques have been used in this shot to merge two scenes together, the shot of the artist is a close up shot and the shot of the destination is a long shot so you can see the detail and try and work out where the location is. I believe this has been done to show the two main elements of the video, the artist who is the main attraction but also the destination (new york) because that is were the video is set but also "it's all about tonight" means they may never have a night like this again and they should make the most of it because they are in such a lovely place. A narrative is used in this video I believe in the way that all the way through she is singing about it being about this one night and it makes the viewers think it's specail because it may never happen again.

Shot 3 - 0:31 seconds
This is a long shot to show the full scene aswell as the amount of people in it to show they maybe the artist's "friends" who she may be going out with. Various props are used eg vintage chairs and a chest and contrast with the large lights and glamarous outfits the dancers and the artist are wearing which shows the comparison between old and new which is a good element to include in a video. The composistion now includes dancers aswell as the artist to show that she wont be alone throughout the video but you can still tell she is the most important because she is sitting closest to the camera. Costumes are all very glamarous and link to the narrative of it being all about one night and them making the most of it in these stunning outfits. The location looks like the inside of a garage with the lighting coming from the back of the shot brightening each side of the shot up and I think all the props were put there as this may be another place the group decide to "party".

Shot 4 - 0:33 seconds
This is another close up shot used on the mobile phone the artist is using and this is so the viewers can have a close look at what the artist is writing and it says "ready to go" which indicates she is telling all her friends that she is ready for the night ahead. Composistion wise it shows her hands because they want it to look realistic like she was the one texting but its also advertising the phone she is using by having the nokia logo in the corner which may make people want to go out and buy that phone if her fans want to be like her.

Shot 5 - 1:43 seconds
This is a medium shot of a dance scene in the middle of the street, I believe it's been used so you can see how many people are there and that they are all dancing in sync. The composistion again shows Pixie Lott stood in the middle of the rest of the female dancers because she is who the viewers want to see most. The costumes the artist is wearing is alot more revealing than shot 3 and it shows off her legs which links back to male attention (shot 1). The location used looks like the middle of a street, this makes me think they could be on the way out and may have stopped to dance because they are so excited about what's going to happen, the light is only coming from the street lights so a spotlight may have been added in the editing stages to make the artist stand out from the rest.

Shot 6 - 2:21 seconds
This shot again has been edited just like shot 2 in the way that two scenes have been overlapped, this time the close up shot is only used on the artists mouth to indicate she is lip syncing perfectly and then an aerial shot of the destination were the group are. This type of shot maybe used again because they wanted to refresh the viewers memories or maybe because the editor of the video thought it added a unique touch to it. A mirror view of the destination is used also this maybe to indicate just how big a night out in New York would be because it's such a great place and could be a once in a lifetime oppurtunity for many people. The artist still has her bright lipgloss on and her nails painted to go out for the night on the tiles.

Shot 7 - 2:33 seconds
Medium shot used here of Pixie and her "girlfriends" and links back to the lyrics "out with the girls" as they are walking to the club. The artist looks different again in the way that she has a different coloured lipstick on and also another outfit, regular costume changes are good to use in music videos because the viewer will never know what to expect and there is always another surpise coming up. The colouring is quite dark in this shot however the bright light shadowing over the artist brightens it up and almost gives me the idea of paparazzi catching an off shot of the celebrity and her friends hitting a club because the camera is very close to her face.

Shot 8 - 2:38 seconds
Another dance shot captured by a medium shot on the camera, this time the group contains boys and links to the lyrics "grab someone if your single grab someone if your not" meaning you can have a good night whoever you are forget about your day to day life because this night is going to be amazing. The composistion of the group is a triangluar shape to show experiments used when creating the video to make sure they were not stood in the same posistion throughout. The costumes include the girls still wearing there glamarous/dressy night out clothing while the male dancers are quite casual which is what normally happens as men dont really need to make much of an effort. Again spotlights have been added in the editing stages to brighten the full shot as it's in the middle of the street and the colours of the clothing contrast in well with the darkness of the street.

Shot 9 - 3:01 seconds
This meat shot is very similar to shot 1, except Pixie is on a slight angle in this shot. The exact same make up and hairstyle is used in this shot like shot 1.The only thing that is really different is her expression which I believe finally links to the narrative because it was all about that night because it would be a once in a lifetime chance to go all out and by her expression it looks like the night lived upto expectations so shows the video and song ends on a high note.

12 Frame Analysis - Arctic Monkeys (Crying Lightening)

Shot 1: 0:14 seconds. A long shot which shows the a small boat in the ocean, it seems to be either sunset or sunrise and this is indicated by the sun on the right hand side of the shot. It's very misty and cloudy but we can see four shadowed figures standing on the boat with instruments, we assume that this is the band

Shot 2: 0:34 seconds. This mid shot shows Alex Turner, the lead singer of the band standing at the front of the boat, this gives the impression that he is the most important. He is wearing dark colours and seems to look quite relaxed although the sky is beginning to look cloudier. He is holding a guitar which he is not playing, but he is singing.

Shot 3: 0:50 seconds. The mid shot then pans left to show the rest of the band on the boat, they too are wearing dark colours but they are playing their instruments. This gives the impression that the rest of the band are not as important as Alex.

Shot 4: 1:34 seconds. This birds eye view shots shows the water has begun to get rougher which suggests that the weather is changing. The band continue to stay in their places and play their instruments. This gives the impression that they're not worried about whats happening around them.

Shot 5: 1:49 seconds. This mid shot shows the lead singer standing at the front of the boat, the darkened figures of the band can be seen standing behind him but only his face can be seen, this is a shallow focus. It is clear that it has begun raining and that it is windy, you can see this by his hair being blown back. He is beginning to look increasingly anxious at the changing weather and has begun playing this guitar.

Shot 6: 2:01 seconds. This extreme long shot shows that it has became night, the lights on the boat have been turned on and the sea looks rough. The band are still in their original positions.

Shot 7: 2:07 seconds. This is a close up shot of the lead singer, we can see by his face that the weather is changing dramatically, he looks worried and begins to hold onto the side of the boat as it beings to move more. He continues to sing.

Shot 8: 2:32 seconds. The camera moves to show the water which is changing colour and bubbling, lightening strikes it which ties in with the name of the song. We then see something emerging from the water.

Shot 9: 2:41 seconds. A ghost like, giant version of the lead singer appears from the water playing guitar, lightening strikes around him. This is an extreme long shot and we can still see the boat but only the outline.

Shot 10: 3:13 seconds. The rest of the band then emerge from the water playing their instruments which suggests once again that they are not as important or focused on as the lead singer. The narrative throughout the video has been told by the lead singer.

Shot 11: 3:26 seconds. The band have now put down their instruments and are sitting on the boat as they sail past the giant versions of themselves. They look up at them in awe and one of the band has a telescope. Alex Turner is sat at the back of the boat, higher up than everyone else, and also the most noticeable as he is wearing an orange jumper and the rest of the band are wearing duller colours. This is a medium long shot.

Shot 12: 3:36 seconds. The final shot shows the view from the telescope. We see the giant ghost like people go back into the water and the weather begins to get calmer, the final shot is of the weather changing to look peaceful.

9 Frame Analysis - Katy Perry (California Girls)

Shot 1 - 0:00 seconds
The first shot shows the box of a board game. This shot introduces the song and also sets us up for the theme of the video. Lots of bright colours are used so this draws the viewer in and makes them want to watch more of the video. This mainly appeals to a female audience by the colour theme which is mainly pinks. You can not see clearly who the artist is unless you look very carefully, or have seen the video before, so this makes the viewer want to watch more of the video to find out more information

Shot 2 - 0:06 seconds
This shot makes it clear to the audience who the artist of the video is whilst still showing the theme of the video. We see that it's Katy Perry and this is a long shot to show her full body and the setting and theme of the video. This shows us that Katy is a character in a candy themed board game and this sets up the rest of the video narrative. Editing techniques have been used to make it look like Katy is a doll being used in a game, this is shown by the giant hand that places her at the beginning of the board.

Shot 3 - 0:18 seconds
This is a meat shot showing Katy Perry. These are used by the record company to sell the artist. This shot was used as she is famous this introduces the viewers properly to Katy as it is a close up of her face. She is licking an ice cream and this could support the male gaze theory as it is very seductive. This is the first time that the video really appeals to a male audience. Although this shot is seductive she also looks quite innocent which makes us think that this is a very girly video targeted at mainly a younger audience.

Shot 4 - 0:23 seconds
This shot contradicts the theme of innocence and could suggest that everything is not what it seems. Editing has been used to make a giant gummy bear and this keeps in with the candy theme which is so prominent in this video. Katy waves at the bears and they make a rude gesture to her. The bears support the narrative of the video, showing Katy as a sweet innocent character and suggest that the bears may be bad. This could appeal to a younger audience as it has the sense of a fairytale, but also appeals to an older audience by the gesture that the bear makes.

Shot 5 - 1:00 seconds
This is another meat shot but it is also there to appeal to the male audience. This sells the artist, but she is laying naked on a cloud of pink candy floss and winking seductively at the camera which attracts the male viewer. Although there is nudity, you do not see anything which still makes this appropriate for the younger viewers. This is cleverly used as Katy is at the front of the camera, looking directly into it which support the male gaze theory once again but it also is different from the rest of the video as we are taken away from the narrative to see the artist perform, but it still keeps in with the theme of the video overall.

Shot 6 - 1:47 seconds
This medium close up shot shows Katy and some girls with a giant ginger bread man. The composition of the shot makes us focus mainly on the ginger bread man which is strange as the artist is telling the narrative. The fact that they are all huddled around the ginger bread man and he is smiling shows that they may be 'friends' which contrasts with the gummy bears seen earlier in the video. This ties into the theme of a fairytale showing both the good and bad creatures that are in the game.

Shot 7 - 2:11 seconds
This is the first time that we see Katy Perry properly perform. An extreme long shot is used to show the dance sequence which is a generic convention of a pop video. The costumes are keeping in with the theme of the video but are also suggestive as they are quite revealing and Katy has cakes placed over her breasts. The costume choices make Katy stand out even in the extreme long shot as she is dressed in a bright blue colour whereas the dancers are dressed in pinks and yellows. This is cleverly used to show that the artist is still the main focus of the video.

Shot 8 - 2:31 seconds
This shot shows Katy Perry dancing next to Snoop Dog as he raps. This is a common convention of rap videos to have a girl in a revealing outfit dance next to the man. Snoop Dog also keeps in the candy theme as his clothing is printed with cupcakes. The rest of the dancers are on lower levels than Katy and this suggests that she is more important than them and we also focus on her more because of this.

Shot 9 - 3:23 Seconds
Towards the end of the video, we see Katy and her dancers come face to face with an army of gummy bears. We see her shoot them down by firing cream at them. This shot is targeted at males as it is quite suggestive as she shoots the cream from her breasts, but this also appeals to the females as it can be seen as being quite funny. This shows that Katy is overcoming the 'bad' characters in the board game and also begins to wrap up the video by bringing the narrative close to the end.
